All is Lost for Benfica in Uefa Cup

By: Carlos | November 28th, 2008

After a embarassing loss last night to Olympiakos 5-1, it looks like Benfica are headed out of the Uefa Cup adding another horrible year in European competitions. Benfica have not won a game yet in there group and due to this they have a single point. What made their chances worse was that Metalist beat Galatasaray 1-0 and now only a mathematical miracle can put them in he top 3 of their group.

Here is the breakdown:
For Benfica to atleast finish 3rd and go through to the next round:
The most ideal conclusion – Hertha Berlin cannot win any one their next 2 games; Galatasaray must beat Metalist; Benfica must hammer Metalist by a good amount of goals in the last round.
The still ok conclusion – Hertha Berlin loses one game and ties one game; Metalist loses; Benfica hammers Metalist
The complicated conclusion – Berlin loses to Galatasaray; Metalist beats Olympiakos; Olympiakos and Hertha tie in last round; Benfica can go through with a win agaisnt Metalist. This would result in a 4-point tie between Berlin, Olympiakos, and Benfica for third place. Here Uefa rules will come into account:
1. Difference in goals scored/allowed
2. Most goals scored
3. Most goals scored away from home
4. Most wins
5. Most wins away from home
6. Coefficient of points accumulated by club and country over last 5 seasons.

Well this is it. Benfica fans should pray for a miracle to happen. We will see what happens in the soon future.
Toodle-loo for now.

I think you mean Olympiacos must beat Metalist, not Galatasaray.

I wonder why Quique Sanchez Flores was so arrogant last night in Greece? He thought his side could win without an experienced Kostas Katsouranis in the starting eleven. Any idea why the Greece international didn’t start?

yes i do mean olympiakos to beat metalist. Quique said he didnt start katsouranis because katso said he was only 70% well to play so coach decided not to play him.
